Transplantation immunity in bone homografting.

چکیده

The knowledge that homografts of many tissues have a limited period of survival, and the revival of the theory of tissue immunity (Gibson and Medawar 1943, Medawar 1944, 1945) makes it of interest to know how bone homografts compare with other tissues in this respect. Since 1878 homografts ofbone have been known to be clinically effective (Macewen 1912), and the introduction of the bone bank (Inclan 1942) has led to a great increase in their use. The role of tissue immunity reactions in bone homografting has received little attention until recently, and reliable information concerning cell survival and the source of bone formation in these clinically effective grafts is lacking. The present study was undertaken to determine whether homografts of bone behaved in the same way as those of other tissues with respect to cell survival and the production of transplantation immunity, and to consider the importance of such a reaction if found to be present.

Proceedings of the Bone Marrow Transplantation and Chemical Radiation Protection

Radiation accidents.-Flynn outlined in detail all the available information on the Los Alamos radiation accident of December 1958. The accident occurred in a plutonium salvage operation. Supportive therapy probably prevented the exposed person from dying almost immediately from a shock-like syndrome. He died 36 hours after the accident, from central nervous system damage. Vos reviewed newspaper...

Evaluation of the Repair of Bone Defect after Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Transplantation in Rat

Background & Objective: Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) are multipotent stem cells that can proliferate and differentiate into osteogenic cells . T his study aimed to investigate the effects of BMSC transplantation for the repair of bone defects in the rat.   Materials & Methods : Twenty-eight male adult rats were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 ( control group) received no treatment after the...

Studies in the transplantation of bone. V. The capacity of fresh and treated homografts of bone to evoke transplantation immunity. 1963.

Skin transplanted as a homograft from one animal to a genetically dissimilar animal of the same species is rejected after nine to twelve days, probably because of actively acquired immune reactions (Medawar 1944, 1945; Billingham, Brent and Medawar 1954; Billingham, Brent, Medawar and Sparrow 1954). The acquired resistance is termed either transplantation immunity (Billingham, Brent and Medawar...

HLA-haploidentical bone marrow transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency using E rosette fractionation and cyclosporine.

Eight patients with severe combined immunodeficiency received bone marrow cells from their HLA haplotype-identical fathers after bone marrow T cell depletion by rosetting with neuraminidase-treated sheep red cells. Because the method led to the infusion of a small percentage of T lymphocytes (0.1% to 0.3%), cyclosporin was given by continuous intravenous infusion for two months in order to prev...
